![EXCLUSIVE: Former First Lady Michelle Obama steps out with friends Bruce Springsteen and wife Patti Scialfa at celebrity restaurant Polo Bar in New York City. The two families have been friends since The Boss campaigned for Barack Obama during his successful run for the White House in 2008. Michelle famously told her President husband he needed to spend more time with Springsteen. Both men have talked about their friendship — fortified in part by the bond between their wives, Michelle and Patti. In the first episode of a podcast, called Renegades, Obama, 59, said he and Springsteen, 71, "grew to trust each other" based on conversations in which they reflected on feeling "invisible" throughout their childhoods. Springsteen sang with a gospel choir at the newly elected president's inauguration in 2009 and later recalled how he thought Obama had the wrong number the first time the Chicago Democrat called him. "And I said, 'OK, let me figure this out. I am a guitar-playing high school graduate from Freehold, New Jersey. And — OK — you want me to do what?" Springsteen said. Over the years, both have realized they had more in common than they initially realized. Namely, that they both felt like outsiders. "I always kept one foot in sort of the blue collar world and one foot in the counter culture world," Springsteen said of growing up in New Jersey. Michelle Obama, 53, just gave us major FOMO while stepping out in Miami looking nothing short of chic. The former First Lady treaded barefoot through the sand as she rocked a white triangle bikini top, matching ripped cut-off shorts and a sheer blouse. Can we ditch this winter weather and go join her?! Michelle wore the casual look while walking off of Miami Beach on Jan. 13 surrounded by friends, Secret Service personnel, and her 19-year-old daughter Malia. It’s rare to see Michelle wearing something this laid-back, but we’re honestly so here for it! She looked comfortable and relaxed, which is definitely well-deserved after spending eight years in the White House by Barack Obama‘s side (who, btw, was unfortunately missing from the beach outing). We’re also super excited to see her spending time with her daughter. Malia just finished her first semester at Harvard University, and it looks like their family vacation lined up perfectly with her winter break.
It definitely seems like the teen’s parents have missed her while she was away at school. In a recent interview, Obama opened up about what it was like dropping his oldest daughter off at college back in August. “I held it together in front of Malia and then we drove away,” he told David Letterman in the premiere episode of Netflix’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. “Secret Service is in the front, and they’re just looking ahead. They’re pretending they can’t see me in the back sniffling. But the ritual of it was powerful.” Aww! We’re glad the former first family has been able to reunite, even if Obama and his other daughter Sasha didn’t make it onto the beach.
