Joshua ‘Li’iBoy’ Shintani Dead: ‘Shallow Hal’ Actor Dies From Pneumonia At 32
Joshua was just 32 years old when he passed away on Nov. 25, just one day before Thanksgiving, TMZ has learned. His mother brought him to the emergency room on the island of Kauai earlier in the week, when doctors discovered he had an advanced case of pneumonia. Unfortunately, it was too late, and he lost his battle with the sickness. Our hearts go out to Joshua and his family.
Joshua had become something of a legend on his native island of Kauai when he landed the cameo in Shallow Hal. Just a high school senior at the time, producer Peter Farrelly saw Joshua strumming his uke outside of a public library in Hawaii and gave him the role on the spot. The scene with Jack Black where Joshua sings “Never Forget Where I’m From” while playing his ukulele became one of the most memorable of the film. It was serendipity that Peter would see Joshua while on vacation, as Joshua never acted in anything else.
It’s so heartbreaking that someone so talented and kind was taken so young. We’re glad that Joshua got to leave his gentle legacy on film for all of his friends and family to remember him by, we just wish we could have seen more from this bright young actor.
